Re: Best monitor / resolution for 2000 rig?

I forgot to re-calculate one thing above, it should have been 27" 16:10 1920x1200 to have roughly the same PPI as 15" 4:3 1024x768 (= 85 PPI = 0.3mm pixel pitch), not just 24" as I mistakenly wrote above. There are no 27" like that on newegg, only one 25". The monitor vs non-native resolutions will …

Re: Best monitor / resolution for 2000 rig?

I would go for Trinitron or Diamondtron CRT monitors, I even use them with my main rig. As for resolution, most games from that era max out at 1280x1024 or 1024x768. Diablo 2 (year 2000) maxes out at 800x600 even (without community hacks). Then there are some games with seemingly unlimited …

Re: Calibrating CRT screens?

I am not sure I understood what you are saying OP, so let me ask this: Are you absolutely unable to adjust the geometry (width, height, position, etc.) using the OSD controls, when the currently active resolution is showing up as "no preset"? I'm able to manually set the geometry. I'm just bummed …

I am not sure I understood what you are saying OP, so let me ask this: Are you absolutely unable to adjust the geometry (width, height, position, etc.) using the OSD controls, when the currently active resolution is showing up as "no preset"? Or did I misunderstood the issue at hand? edit: And what …

Re: Modern GPU with VGA for CRT

These days I am using a DisplayPort>VGA convertor with its own integrated DAC (500MHz!) for latest GPUs and its just fine. Can you tell what converter you're using ? I'm quite interested in such a thing since it seems RGB output is bye bye on new stuff and HDMI converters are not able to do any …

Re: Modern GPU with VGA for CRT

Perhaps you are not judging the same "source image"? (you did not post any details so I can only assume) On those old cards you are probably running something like Win98 or XP which has fonts and UI optimized to look nice and sharp on CRTs. Newer versions of Windows with ClearType and UI scaling …

Re: Need help identifying strange VGA cables

Since I often read otherwise, I havent noticed any difference when using BNC cable or regular VGA cable (of reasonable quality such as those with ferrite ends) when using "modern" CRT monitors. On the contrary, the BNC cable does not have that pin for EDID information transfer which can cause some …

Re: Build for some games.

I can't speak about the other games but Mafia is my favorite... so I can provide some performance figures. First thing - I never managed to get rid of the built-in 60 fps lock, so it is possible you won't get 75 fps... Yeah, Mafia is a classic! :) You can actually unlock the ingame FPS …

Re: Thoughts on sound blaster for XP Games?

This is the sound card I ended up getting for my late WinXP build after reading multiple recommendations for it around here: https://asia.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-x-fi-titanium-fatal1ty-professional-series (Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro) Got a used one locally for 25 …

Re: Monitor very dark

You are welcome, it would be a shame to throw it out if there is a chance it could be restored :) I hope more people will attempt to repair their CRTs so they dont go extinct too soon. Its not like they are going to make new ones these days and they are a perfect pair with old games. I am not sure …

Re: Monitor very dark

My codes range between 00 and FF which is HEX for 0 and 255. More info is in the 2070SB service manual here: https://hardforum.com/data/attachment-files/2016/12/70387_DIAMOND_PRO_2070SB__NEC_Multisync_FP2141SB.pdf But you are out of luck there so put all settings the way they were originally and …

Re: Monitor very dark

Where do you see this "Gamma Correction" setting exactly? I cant find it mentioned anywhere. Also, the settings from your screenshot are pretty limited. Are there no other pages in the factory menu with more settings? On my Diamondtron model (2070SB) there is a ton more settings like this for …

Re: Monitor very dark

This is progress, nice! The menu is quite different to what I am used to so give me some time to have a look at that manual and I will get back to you later today. But at first look I dont think you can adjust it from menu alone :/ Start by writing down all settings values on paper somewhere (+ …

Re: Monitor very dark

This can actually be fixed in most cases :) The following works for me on another Diamondtron monitor (Mitsubishi 2070SB) so you can try it and maybe it will work on yours too: 1) Turn the monitor ON while holding down EXIT button 2) after you see picture, stop holding EXIT and press (not hold) EXIT …
