Well to be fair: the SSI Innovation was a PC card of the late 80s. It wasn’t widespread, but it was commercially available!

Yes, the card was a standalone 65c02 computer. For the C64 it would have great benefits, since the CPU was clocked pretty fast and came with its own ROM and RAM. Watcom is a great idea. Does it emit real mode code as well? Planet X3 was written using notepad and a simple assembler... so most important is the coder, the tools come second. 😉

You can always use the TSR or EMM386 to remap the port. Since basically all Tandy games are real mode, this should be no problem.
