In DOS i would remove everything regarding Sound Blaster settings/Drivers form your startup files and start fresh with the Philscomputerlab Sound Blaster 16 drivers.

As you can see from my other thread: Sound Blaster: From best to worst I actually have no information if the CT4170 (CT2511) has a clipping problem or not. Maybe it's fixed with the CT2511 as you suggest. Specific testing would be needed.

Are you getting the same thing from both the amplified speaker out and the line out jack? The clipping i had with the CT2940 happens 100% before the mixer so any output is affected and at all sound blaster mixer settings. The CT2230 should have the same type of HNB as the CT3980 (should happen …

Notice how i swapped L/R channels by reversing the cable on the MPU side! My SCB-55 is v1 and L/R are swapped so this is my fix!

CT2940 has best SNR while still having a real OPL3 chip (if you can find one with the OPL3 chip installed). That card sounds beautiful. But keep the games volume in check because it's prone to clipping. I'm talking from my own experience.
