1st gen Pentium provides best game play performance for DOS games. Pentium 100mhz thru 233mhz. Some DOS game play on a 486 is choppy. The CPU is not powerful enough. So if you Goal is to play the most DOS games with good performance then get a Pentium CPU. Also the 486 can NOT play MP3’s.

In DOS you need to load all drivers HIGH in Autoexec.bat and Config.sys It requires a lot of conventual memory.

For best DOS game play performance. You really need a Pentium CPU. First gen. Pentium 83mhz thru 233mhz. So I would say the IBM Thinkpad 380 with 166mhz CPU is a good choice. It has a 4x CDROM and floppy drive built in. Easy to repair and upgrade. Reliable.

I would get a fan speed controller along with it so you can adjust the speed of the fan to quiet it. Most fans speed at full speed and are loud. You don’t need the fan to spin at full speed to cool the CPU. Also check the temp with a temp-gun. Check you recommended CPU temp on “CPU world.com”.

That’s about right. My k6-lll+@550mhz scored 616 in Speedsys. Not much of a difference. Nice build. I would make sure you apply the Win98 update patches for the K6 CPU. Link to my build : AMD K6-3+@550mhz., Voodoo-3000 (tower)

I would leave it as an 386 computer or at least use an IBM 486dx-66 Blue lighting CPU. Keep it all Blue lighting and call it the “Blue lighting build”. This will probably be the last sound card I purchase. The Sound Blaster X3 with 7.1 surround sound capability. This will complete my home theater setup. This sound card is loaded with features and software. Most importantly. It works with PC and Mac.
