Try the XT-IDE rom. This can typically fix a lot of motherboard stupidity.

Use polymer capacitors 6.3V, 1500uF, with ESR of approx 0.012 ohm at 100khz.

I won't bother with the resistor. Your 286 already pulls enough power from the 5V rail. The article you reference is good if you are using a cheap group regulated PSU and only using the 12V line from it for some other purpose (3d printer)

You shouldn't have to leave 50% free on a CF card to have it work properly. CF cards do NOT have the TRIM feature, so there is NO way to release blocks that have been written by the OS back to over-provisioning once the OS stops using them. So it doesn't really matter how much free space the OS sees …

You can buy Dallas RTC chips from places like rsonline, element14 and other online component stores. They are still being produced and supplied as a standard market item. They are not expensive, and better than taking the lottery on a Chinese ebay seller.
