You're right about the make, Realtek alright. But the IC you photographed wasn't the audio codec. ;) It looks like you have a Gigabyte P43-ES3G board, which contains the ALC888 codec. 440BX (or cut down ZX) is a proven chipset in terms of stability, and most of the BX/ZX boards have one or more ISA slot(s). I think there are more Slot1 BX boards than Socket370, you pick. 😜

Memory from Matrox G400 cards should be compatible, I already did a few attempts but I find it very tricky. That's because of lack of soldering experience of course. 😉 Don't forget to relocate the tiny resistors after you succesfully replaced the VRAM. My next try will succeed! 😜

Last gen cards dont have VGA or DVI-I/A, so it wouldn't make sense to implement old tech like RAMDAC or support for CRTs. Does your 1050 have any analog output?

Sounds (looks) like a video memory issue. Best way to rule things out is trying the card in another system. Any physical damage on the card, like missing capacitors or touching/shorting video memory solder leads? Have you tried lowering the refresh rate? Could be the RAMDAC. Pics! :p

I guess you have multiple systems, so dual boot W98/2K is not necessarily important? A vote for 2k then, most compatible/versatile and still snappy. I blew an AT PSU. Wasn't loud, but the smell...ugh. Now I'm considering buying a cheap Intertech 'picopsu' rated 200 Watt for NAS purposes, and get an ATX to AT adapter cable. Anyone with experience?

Are the printers shared on the network through any of the systems? Run Wireshark and capture some frames when it occurs to rule the network out. Look for broadcast packets.
