you have to do this on your host operating system. DOSBox does not support setting file attributes

we haven't. We emulate the memory as well. DOSBox is a pc emulator. so we have no issues like this.

Everybody who has the DOSBox Author "badge" has write access to the DOSBox code (and thus directly contributes to DOSBox), this includes wd. I hope this clears the misunderstanding.

the patch looks like an improvement. However, this function should oneday be rewritten to include the functionality that is now used when typing a command in the shell; then the shell should call this function, but tab completion makes things a little tricky.

You are trying to use long file names in an operating system that didn't support those. While there are workarounds, the best would be to stick to the conventions that come with DOS.
