Maybe you sohuld try playing the original versions (Sega Genesis or Sega CD) using emulators like Fusion or Gens32. Chances are they are easier to configure and the gaming experience is far better. Sega PC ports never had a great reputation.

That's VERY interesting... How can I learn if a particular game has one of those ports available? I remember using The Doom Legacy a while ago, but never heard of these others...

It should work fine under a DOS partititon. I remember playing my version under MS-DOS 7.0 (the one that comes with W98) quite well in my Athlon 1800+.
