MPXPLAY claims to support AC97 under DOS. You could grab its source code and look how it's doing what it's doing.

Yes, and I assume that the DS12887+ is the one you need, but don't take my word for it. The datasheet will probably tell you which component it is a substitute for.

Well, to quote Maxim: The DS12885, DS12887, and DS12C887 real-time clocks (RTCs) are designed to be direct replacements for the DS1285 and DS1287. I.e. you won't be able to get a DS1287, but a compatible substitute. And IIRC, the Mouser I'm talking about ships everything from Texas.

For that kind of thing I like to use GNU mtools on my Linux system. A line like mcopy -i disk.img build/from.com ::TO.COM can easily be added to a Makefile. I don't know whether there is a Windows port of it, though.

What about a smaller three-digit module behind a rectangular piece of dark red or dark green acrylic? That way one could match the cutout in the case and still use a readily available display module.

I spotted an error in the schematic: The values for the LM1117-ADJ's configuration resistors were way off. I must have forgotten to set the reference voltage in KiCAD's voltage regulator calculator. The updated version is online and the board layout stays the same, anyway. Everything else looks good …
