Re: Compaq SLT 286

When it comes to early laptops, the Compaq SLT is my absolute favorite. Awesome-looking and rock-solid reliability. No cheap, aluminum SMD caps to speak of anywhere. I’ve got 5 of these things (3 SLT 286s and 2 SLT 386s/20s). Also, a pro-tip for disassembly: you don’t have to remove the plastic back …

Re: DUDE, show me your Dell!

Okay, here’s my Inspiron 2500. This is basically a stripped-down 8000. Doesn’t have the dedicated graphics, docking connector, the S-video/TV connector, 1394 FireWire, or a Trackpoint. This is also the base-model with a Celeron and a 12” 800 x 600 screen. It’s a decent little vintage laptop though. …

Re: DUDE, show me your Dell!

Are ALL of those getting trashed or just the broken ones? It'd be a crying shame for those to all be junked, as I'm sure most of them probably work fine. I love the look of that particular case style. I've got one of the thinner, single drive bay models that's a Pentium 166. Very well-built machines …

Re: DUDE, show me your Dell!

Here's two family-photos of *most* of my Dell laptops: IMG_4977.jpg IMG_4978.jpg Aside from the duplicates I have, the only one missing is my Inspiron 2500, which I was just too lazy to pull out of storage. I'll get a pic of it tomorrow. From top-left to bottom-right: Latitude XPi, Latitude CPi, …

Re: DUDE, show me your Dell!

I got the Ni-Cd battery out of the Latitude XPi I posted above. It had corroded the connector and the whole connector came off of the motherboard! Thankfully, the pads are still there and in good shape, so if I get another battery for it I can just solder it back on. No big deal. I'm very glad the …

Re: DUDE, show me your Dell!

Finally got this laptop that I have been wanting forever! thumbnail_IMG_4975.jpg thumbnail_IMG_4976.jpg This is a Dell Latitude XPi (not the CD version). It is a Pentium 133 and this particular one has 24MB of RAM. I even have another memory module somewhere, but I don't know what I did with it. …

Re: DUDE, show me your Dell!

Well, the more I used Windows 7 on here, I started noticing that the CPU usage frequently and randomly would shoot up to 100%, which I don’t like, as it makes the CPU get quite hot. Vista and 7 seem to be very bad about that on older systems. I’m sure I could spend hours and potentially find the …

Re: DUDE, show me your Dell!

what resolution is that screen? 1400 x 1050. Looks pretty sweet. They also made a 1600 x 1200 option for this laptop, which I'd love to find someday. You typically see these laptops with the standard 1024 x 768 display. I finally got the dual-boot all done. Took forever to reinstall everything, but …

Re: DUDE, show me your Dell!

This Dell Inspiron 4150 is a trooper! I put Windows 7 on this 1.7 GHz P4M with 1GB of RAM, and it runs FINE! The initial boot-up takes a little bit, but once it's running it's actually pretty quick! I've had Core 2 Duos run 7 slower than this! thumbnail_IMG_4971.jpg I think I'm going to throw in a …

Re: Retro Rig Photo Thread

Here's one I got recently that I'm really loving: IMG_4964.jpg IMG_4965.jpg IMG_4967.jpg It's a Dell Inspiron 4150 (also sold as the Latitude C640). I love my old Dells  It has a 1.7GHz Pentium 4M, ATi Radeon 7500 16MB graphics, the optional 1400 x 1050 display (came standard with a 1024 x …

CTX-SPII350

This is a machine I was incredibly lucky to find at Goodwill! I found it about a year-and-a-half ago or so. I always loved these CTX machines because I love the look of them. Before we get to the specs, here are some pics of this machine: IMG_4960.jpg IMG_4961.jpg IMG_4962.jpg IMG_4963.jpg This is a …

Dell Precision M50 Mobile Workstation

This is a machine I finally found that I had been trying to find for awhile: IMG_4942.jpg IMG_4943.jpg IMG_4944.jpg IMG_4946.jpg This is the Dell Precision M50. One of the very best laptops of its time (2002 and 2003). The specs of this machine are: 2.0GHz Pentium 4M Nvidia Quadro 4 700GoGL graphics …
