Genoa Video Drivers

Does anyone have the Genoa Spectrum Series (46xx) driver shown here: https://web.archive.org/web/19961105055735/http://www.genoasys.com/ftp.html "Spectrum Series Cards Drivers Version 1.2 for Win3.x and DOS only." Particularly, I am looking for what modes can be set on the Super Spectrum 4650. A …

Re: Can any PC with ISA slots work with a TTL (MDA/CGA/EGA) graphics card, or are there other BIOS/driver requirements?

I was disagreeing with your assertion that it is better to "avoid having two display cards" and there is "not a point to run dual screen." My comment was all in response to playing a game with shades of color on a monochrome monitor. I never said there was no point ever. I said avoid two cards if …

Re: Can any PC with ISA slots work with a TTL (MDA/CGA/EGA) graphics card, or are there other BIOS/driver requirements?

I have VGA + mono/herc cards in most of my systems. The extra screen is very useful for showing debug output when programming. Turbo Debugger and SoftICE can also use the mono display and not disturb the main screen. Yes, that is what they ended up used for late into the VGA era, for dual screen, …

Re: Can any PC with ISA slots work with a TTL (MDA/CGA/EGA) graphics card, or are there other BIOS/driver requirements?

CGA/EGA/VGA + Hercules graphics is possible, under one condition: Hercules graphics software only using the first video page. CGA/EGA/VGA: B8000..BFFFF Hercules text and first graphics page: B0000..B7FFF Hercules second graphics page: B8000..BFFFF There are some Hercules clones with a jumper to …

Re: Can any PC with ISA slots work with a TTL (MDA/CGA/EGA) graphics card, or are there other BIOS/driver requirements?

@the3dfxdude: Do you recall if there was any pattern with which machines didn't work (e.g., later model Pentiums, only machines with AGP slots, etc.)? I had to check to remember better. So I pulled the machines out. I tested 3 of them. I have a few more that can be tested, but I think this is …

Re: Can any PC with ISA slots work with a TTL (MDA/CGA/EGA) graphics card, or are there other BIOS/driver requirements?

The PC BIOS is supposed to initialize MONO/CGA by design, if you ask it to. If the BIOS doesn't contain that code, then yes, you'll have some trouble doing it, even if there are ISA slots. These cards usually don't supply video rom, so you'd be out of luck there, although there might be a model or …

Re: 40 GB IDE Hard Drive can not be detected on IDE, works fine in an external USB case (!?)

It's likely a WD drive has a jumper setting for a single drive. It's been that way for years. What is connected to your IDE cable? If it's the only drive, remove the jumper and place it on the storage position. They usually don't print the instructions on the drive label. https://eshop.macsales.com …

Re: 40 GB IDE Hard Drive can not be detected on IDE, works fine in an external USB case (!?)

Hi, my drive doesn't have a jumper setting for single drive. For single drive it's supposed to be configured as master. However I'll definitely try cable select and 2 drives on one channel - I missed that when checking the drive. Thanks for the suggestions! It's likely a WD drive has a jumper …

Re: The frustrations of the GPU market

Ohio has water, makes sense to build here instead of AZ. AZ has no water problem, once you understand how it is managed here. Actually, too much water has put whole towns out of business: https://winfirst.wixsite.com/arizonamininghistory/toughnut-mine Anyway there is already a massive Intel complex …

Re: Pentium mmx 233 aiming for the stars

Why just 440hx at a fixed cpu clock? This is basically just a video card race as it is, which I'm sure some people would know the result already. I'd be flexible to all the Intel pentium chipsets. I have a 440tx. I'd participate with an intel pentium + intel mb square off, to see where that will …

Re: what will you do when your last hardware fails?

I was reading about CPUs life expectancy being around 20 years due to tiny but cumulative use-wear stresses. There are some speculations that manufacturing process is directly tied to longevity of chips. Hardware around 486-Pentium era is just too robust to die from electron migration within …

Re: ISA GPU for 286 Build

I got this from eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/174772780600. It's based on the Cirrus Logic CL-GD5401-42QC-B and has 256Kb of VRAM. I think it's period correct for my mainboard but seems a bit trashy. Hopefully it will do the trick; I paid a bit more than $30 for this POS:P It's not really what we …
