A Yamaha YMF701 (OPL3-SA), does anyone know how does it differ from the 71x series? I found references about the latter here on the forums but not the 701.

Do you know how this card compares to CL-GD542X cards? I have to pick between this and a 2MB CL-GD5428 for my 486 build :) Is the 2MB upgrade on either card of any use for a 486 PC? I have no idea how does it perform, I have not had the chance to test it so far, furthermore this is my first VLB …

You can safely assume its marketing wank, PC Mag 6 Dec 1994 description sounds like some kind of deeper fifo to hide rasterization delays from host (outputting framebuffer to screen blocks main host from writing to video memory). Should one replace it with a rechargeable one, or with a regular Li-ion coin battery (non-rechargeable)? Use a normal CR-2032 , non-rechargeable you can also chose not to install a battery at all - it will not hurt playback you just won't be able to save settings. I did not install batteries again …

Looking at the results we can say that there is roughly 10% difference in performance between the low-end (Cirrus) and high-end cards (Ark). If it's true, then I would say that all these "high end" VLB cards are extremely overpriced and Cirrus & Co is the best bang for the buck for someone looking …
