Re: Why DOS died...

in Milliways
DOS isn't dead, yes. But this statement does not really give the idea how alive it is. I think we can use the Conservation status that is used for animals to unerstand where DOS actually is. It still can be found "in the wild" - rarely, but still used for some tasks, and kept and used by hobbyists. …

Re: Soundblaster and RolandMT sound problem

in DOS
Ok, just now i am getting a hang of the stuff. All those manual entries seemed like they were working but they actually didn't. Now when i have the better idea what soundcard i must use i started fresh again from the beginning. Firstly i installed "Audician 32" from PhilsComouterLab, a package for …

Re: ES1869 and DOS

in DOS
I vaguely recall an ESS card that would also not work with the older version of ESSCFG that I had. Then I found a slightly newer version and it worked. You might want to check that. I can't recall the version numbers though.

Re: Soundblaster and RolandMT sound problem

in DOS
Just FYI: Music in games isn't always MIDI. If it's stored in the MIDI format your soundcard will try to play it using FM Synthesis or through a Wavetable. Wavetables are often optional boards or can be found on more expensive soundcards. All other music is mostly OPL2 or OPL3 (also often referred …

Re: Great soundcard audio!

in Milliways
I've recorded a bunch of my favourites on my YT channel: https://youtube.com/channel/UCeWw3nEe359_gcnxnG0214Q I try to record with the best possible audio device for that specific title. So I've got an MT32, SC88, AWE64 Gold and a Gravis Ultrasound installed in my PC 😄

Re: Soundblaster and RolandMT sound problem

in DOS
Thx for the reply. Well idk even on my first install when i did try installing a bunch of different drivers for some reason those specific games did only work ind soundblaster for sfx and roland for music. Now, how did my soundcard produce the sound i really don't have a clue, it's probably some …

Re: Soundblaster and RolandMT sound problem

The Roland MT32 sound is ONLY for users who have an external MT-32 module and a MIDI cable connected to the gameport. The same goes for all General Midi options in games. You'd need an external MIDI sound module for those as well. So do not select this option for your laptop. I googled your laptop …

Re: Running Nox on retro machine

in Windows
I used to play it on a pentium 200 MMX and it ran fine in low res mode so I think your system should be handle it. I've not tried to GOG version but I doubt they changed anything major to the required specs.

Re: Best sound/music option for DooM?

BTW, the 3DO port of Doom had a remarkable soundtrack , featuring remixed versions of the original songs. That version of the game was not the greatest, but its OST remains superb to this day. Pretty cool to hear it played by a real band on actual instruments. To me, Doom sounds the best on the …

Re: Pros and cons of sound cards

Thanks @Hezus, this is answer I was really looking for. :D But I must admit, I didn't think about anything from regular SoundBlaster Pro, maybe Pro 2? And I never heard about ESS and Sound Galaxy. :) I saw Gravis as LGR reviewed tho. Here is a review of the ESS Audiodrive 1868f: https://youtu.be/ …
