most of my dead drives have either been DOA or died in their first few months of use or due to improper handling, so I agree that natural end of life is probably not the vast majority ^^

ooooo this is one where the whole drive mechanism is in the tray right? I love it. I think I was watching one of these on ebay, but it was way too expensive.

glad you got the data off :) I've never really been able to get the freezer method to work reliably. Some drives will "work" after (run for about 2-3 minutes and die again), some will """work""" (spin up but not be recognized or appear as unformatted / empty to an OS), or just have no effect at all. …

Nice! I have one as well. Let us know your impressions once you start using it! I only quickly tested it with my laptop, but I need to test it with a proper machine that can output more than 60Hz ^^ I noticed a slight convergence issue in the bottom right corner which apparently can't be fixed …

interesting, I never thought that could cause clicking, I always thought that that would make the drives just refuse to work outright.

it would probably need a few hours, the bag is there to help with condensation, the question is if that HDD isn't too new already for this to even work at all.

how long did you keep it in? maybe try in a different orientation, if that doesn't work it's probably too far gone for an easy intermittent fix.

it looks like a layer underneath the top traces to me, groundplane maybe? would make a repair quite hard 😒 ...poor voodoo

heh, I know that feeling, I kind of really want a keyboard again to play around with midi stuff, even though I probably haven't played in 20 years... and no I couldn't really play back then either, it was a Yamaha PSR 200, recently gave it away to my nephews, now I'd rather have a smaller one …
