I do not think there is a board BIOS with LBA for your board. You could try an add-on BIOS (like XT-ide, Promise EIDE, etc). I think there is one for the 1433/50-UIV but it has a newer chipset (498+496 versus 491+493)...btw those Bioteq chipsets are really UMC afaik...

Sounds like a bad ground. The metal case of the Xtal needs be grounded or noise effects it......and your finger was causing a grounding effect maybe. Look for bad via or cold solder on the ground plane in that area..

Since Cisco bought Linksys they seem to make sure that everything Linksys is crappy and can't possibly punch up to the enterprise segment, as prior Linksys hardware could. 3Com stuff I have had here seems very literally underpowered, it browns out it's own power when several ports are active. …

My vintage work area 10/100 hub/switch Dlink DSH-8 died, replaced it with Linksys SE2800 but was a bit of pain getting everything working again, it did not like some of my 10Mbit stuff at first.... Any suggestions on a good ether switch that handles vintage 10Mbit well ?

Agree rasz_pl. And with a soldered BIOS chip is PIA if eeprom goes bad, would think Intel would have taken the same care as most other retail motherboard makers and socket it.

Yes, 440BX can be picky on ram. It is an Intel WS440BX (Tabor or Jabil variant) according to Gateway. Some have onboard audio and ethernet, some do not....

P3 Gateway most likely be an Intel OEM 440BX board (E205351?), max ram per slot on any 440BX is 256Mb AFAIK
