Worst for me were the "dual socket" slot1 + soc 370 boards (pcchips, etc). They never worked proper. Also next is any motherboard that has both AT and ATX psu connectors....always had issues with most of them. Probably just my bad luck but have avoided both types in last decade.....

MY advice is : use any that works. Most of those are all based on reference designs and are equal. The bios are also mostly reference but modded to include the retailers name and id. The one one from iNNo3d should be fine...added: Aopen is Acer, nothing special there....

Mountain tape drives required specific software to work IIRC. Most of the software that worked with other QIC tape drives does not work with them. Make sure the Dell 4600 you are buying does have the AGP slot, there are a few variants, on some it is missing (but the solder pads are there). For chipset that is good. IIRC It is a Pegatron oem micro board (micro-ATX) so the only bios support you have is thru Dell. Overall probably a good system …

8042's can be programmed for either XT or AT KBC, have never seen a 286 with XT required keyboard yet but suppose it is possible. DId you pull the KBC out and check for corrosion near the old battery location ? It is possible that some via's or bottom of socket has corrosion....

Nice ! Grounds seem to match, can you check pins 16 and 48 to +5v ? just wondering about pin 4 : X1 input read as ground....I never tried ohming a crystal so not sure what to expect.... and board has a 20Mhz XTAL which matches the 6260 datasheet at bitsavers

A few of those Gnds match a 6260 but not enough, unless pin count got off in the 50's.....

wow a 6 or 8Mhz 386 ? ok kidding aside... I think you are in for an uphill battle with that Dell and a 512MB CF unless you use an XT-IDE bios. In 1988 biggest IDE drives were barely 40Mb iirc How are you setting the C/H/S in that Dell ?

What motherboard and what version of Windows ? XP does not support 5.25" drives natively, at all, AFAIK and have tried. You can boot from a DOS floppy and try it. Does the BIOS have a "flopping seek" enable ? on older boards you could enable it and was a good thing to check for the head stepper …

Ok the bios file has the WDC Video bios at the begin, and the Phoenix bios after. There is no scsi bios internal that I could find, so that "active term" chip mentioned is most likely a bios chip. Only other explanation is (bios is scrambled/buried in the Phoenix) or if a NCR 400 and some term chip …
