I'm not sure if this (capacitor problems) is the entirety of the "R300 death issues" but I will say that over the years I've experienced a higher-than-expected rate of failure for R300 cards compared to other cards from that era (e.g. Radeon 9000, GeForce FX, etc), and heard the same from others …

I went to one back in the mid '90s. They had a Forte VFX-1 VR setup and I was able to try Mechwarrior 2 and Flight Unlimited. That's it though.

I have seen personally solder problems with 7900, 8600 and 8800. It tends to manifest as driver crashes, BSODs, or occasional display corruption. 5900XT runs various D3D7/8 games considerably faster than a 9600XT. That's why people thought it was a good deal. It's primarily what the reviews were covering at the time. The childish name calling had better come to an abrupt end, by the way.

I recall the 5900XT being perceived as a pretty solid value at the time, probably the best for the whole FX lineup. It's just a 5900 Ultra with lower clock speeds. I too have read that Pixel Shader 2.0 was basically designed around R300. They brought out the small iterations to cover NV3x, R4x0, and others later.
