Another interesting ATI debilitating OpenGL experience is the KOTOR games, and their predecessor NWN which is on a similar engine. There is again NVIDIA development bias, but some ATI driver versions do run the games fine. If I remember right, the last D3D9 Radeon driver release doesn't work at all.

Have you tried the VIA PCI Latency patch? It tweaks the PCI bus and on some boards with particularly poor BIOS programming can make a large improvement to bandwidth. https://web.archive.org/web/20070331195454/ht … m/net/software/

i dug up some driver benchmarking articles, testing various versions of ati drivers in 2004-2005(before and after doom3's release). they all showed same scores on the 8500 without any improvement, and were as slow as mine. but the performance of the r300 series improved quite a bit in those months, …

Does anyone know of a simple Windows graphics benchmark that will do a screen fill test and saturate the bus the graphics card is attached to? Something like vspeed for DOS maybe. I am wondering just what PCI performance he is getting.

I just remembered something I don't like about the original Audigy card. I have a SB0090 Audigy Platinum. When it is in headphone mode, there is quite audible hiss on the output. This isn't the case with Audigy 2 ZS or Audigy 4. Only an issue if you're a headphone user.

Yeah on Audigy 2 / 4 / X-Fi there is the bit accurate mode that bypasses the DSP. It's not pertinent for gaming though really... X-Fi drivers are ok these days. Some motherboard chipsets have PCI issues that cause problems with CA20K1 though. PCIe-PCI bridge chips on modern boards are trouble for it …

EAX4 was added to the original Audigy in a driver update. All of these cards resample to 16-bit 48KHz if you use the DSP in any way because that is its native processing format. Unreal can use UTGLR too. OldUnreal.com can set you up with that. Recent versions don't seem to work with 9x though. Interestingly, you can use these renderers on cards as old as Radeon 8500 and GeForce 3 and the result is very impressive. It is better than Glide I think, plus you get S3TC support. …
