I would also try an older driver. Maybe a version from a few months after the game's release. ATI OpenGL doesn't necessarily get better with time. Application fixes seem to be lost sometimes or new bugs break old games.

With XP/Vista/7/8 you can use the DanielK Audigy Support Pack 4.5 and that supports even the OEM Audigy cards. There is even a DanielK pack for the cheapo "P17X" boards that don't have a EMU10K2 DSP.

🤣 yeah Verite is astonishingly slow with non VESA modes! I have always wondered why that compromise happened with both (!!) generations of Verite chips.

Emachines m680l5 is 1280x800 native. That was my first widescreen experience and boy was that a pain with games back then. I still have that notebook. It is too beat up to sell but it is still a decent email / web browser. It is maxed out with 2GB RAM and an Athlon 64 3400+.

Weitek Power series was one of the early GUI coprocessors. It is a ~ 1993 chip that was fast for the time. Mainly a Windows 3.x accelerator. P9000 cards use a separate chip for DOS support.
