Well the K5 is some sort of hybrid of the AMD 29000 RISC processor. Basically it translates x86 into its internal language. This is like Pentium Pro and K6 but they are all different. Ok I think the problem definitely is related to AGP somehow. The Radeon 9600 is about as fast in 2D as the Radeon 8500 when I force AGP 4x. If I go in the BIOS and turn on the AGP read/write 1WS, AGP calibration, fast write, etc this causes 2D to be even slower. I don't like VIA AGP but I thought it …

They are very different CPUs. As far as I know they have nothing in common besides using the same socket and being x86. K5 is a beast at per clock performance but it can't go much beyond 133 MHz. It was a dead end.

I have a K5 PR200. I bought it off of CPUWorld when they did a bulk order years ago. I tested this CPU in my 133 MHz Challenge thread. PR200 runs at 133 MHz.

I tried Oldblivion with a Radeon 8500 once and it ran ok. The problem with Oldblivion is the water shader is gone and as a result water looks very flat. Otherwise it's not too bad.

Just be sure to research boards before buying cuz every chipset got used on cheap nasties. 😉 Usual badcap warning. Also the popular K8T800 lacks AGP PCI lock for overclocking although it is perfectly decent overall.

I had an Elite die on me too for no apparent reason although I assumed that it got static damaged or damaged in storage. All I can think of is to make sure the ESP DB is correctly attached and all of the jumpers set. Maybe give it a good air dusting too in case something conductive found its way …

Socket 5/7 boards support at least up to 3.52v because that's what many older CPUs need. This includes chips like K5, some Pentiums, and the Winchips. So you can overvolt a 3.3v chip a little.
