Re: Chronologistic PC emulation

in PC Emulation
DOSBOX would have to simulate so many things. You'd have instruction latencies, quirks, accurate memory/cache bandwidth, buses, etc. Eeek. Massive amount of effort for something of dubious value. I'd rather have the effort put into that Voodoo emulation, personally. 😁

Re: Rendition Verité Speedy3D/RRedline info and pics

V1000 is really only well suited for Rendition's Speedy3D and RRedline APIs. VQuake uses Speedy3D in addition to being designed to render in a way that works well with V1000. V1000 performs poorly with both D3D and OpenGL for various reasons. D3D runs much better than OpenGL though. If you'd like to …

Re: 3D Labs Permedia 2

Yup Permedia has capable OpenGL support. It was the entry level pro graphics chip and that's why it was onboard Diamond's FireGL Pro 1000 workstation card. I wouldn't be surprised if a NVIDIA TNT became a better choice for even professional apps though. TNT is several times faster than Permedia 2 …

Re: 3D Labs Permedia 2

A Virge can play S3D games (ie Terminal Velocity) and Rage Pro can play a unique version of Mechwarrior 2 so don't discount the others there too quickly. Permedia isn't really useful for more than 2D IMO... My FireGL 1000 is a pretty clean 2D card, I'll give it that. Laguna 3D is pure garbage though …

Re: 3D Labs Permedia 2

I ran one in my 3D Accelerator thread, screenshots and benchmarks included. Pretty lame little chip if you ask me. It's just another chip that got steamrolled by competitors. It is missing a number of important features. One interesting thing about it though is that id Software kinda liked it and …

Re: My Ultimate 486

I really just don't get why they made Quake and other Pentium-era apps so FPU heavy in the first place. Were they in bed with Intel and wanted to help them sell more Pentium boxes? The reasoning was that the Pentium was going to be the mass market leader, and obviously it was. id wanted to make a …

Re: My Ultimate 486

What would be cool is if someone found a way to emulate FPU instructions on a Voodoo GPU. XD Heh unfortunately there's no hardware in a Voodoo that is going to execute x87 code. ;) Use a Voodoo 2 or later instead of Voodoo1 because Voodoo1 only has partial triangle setup offload. Might give a …
