Try installing ATI Tray Tools and underclocking RAM and core and see if that fixes anything.

With older ps profiles and without AA, the FX line was usually faster then Ati's. Doom runs great because FX chips have double the Z-rate of radeons. Also id dropped any ati optimizations because of alpha leak when R300 was alone in the field. Later were implemented and R3x0 got significant boosts. …

I see that with the 5900 sometimes too. It seems to have a somewhat unstable framerate. It will get choppy and then starts to hitch as you call it. It's as if it gets extra overwhelmed for a moment and then recovers. Oblivion really brings this out.

5800 Ultra was better than 9700 Pro in most OpenGL games (Quake 3 based of course). And there are some games like KOTOR and NWN that were essentially built for NVIDIA OpenGL and run relatively poorly on ATI hardware. DirectX 8 games run pretty well but I think 9700 Pro pulled ahead usually here. …

I bought a 5200FX, then returned it and paid extra to get an ATI 9800. Gotta tell you thats the kind of step up I was expecting from my Geforce 3. The ATI 9800 one of the great all time 3d boards in my opinion... Yup there's a difference between those two that's for sure. :happyhappy: :happyhappy:

LCDs are tricky. Some have awful scaling, but you can often switch over to GPU scaling instead with modern graphics cards. It's also better to get for example a 1920x1200 screen than a 1680x1050 one because the x1200 height is very compatible with various common 4:3 resolutions.

I still have my 19" Samsung CRT from 10 years ago but I would never get another. I'm just waiting for a good reason to upgrade my main desktop's LCDs and then there will be a hand me down available and I will dump the CRT most likely.

Funny thing about Morrowind is that, assuming you aren't too GPU limited, Oblivion runs about the same. 😁 Morrowind is extremely CPU dependent (read: unbelievably inefficient!)

I had Radeon, Radeon 8500, Radeon 9700. 😀 I didn't want to risk getting a burry GeForce. I was also caught up on ATI being cheap (Radeon LE, 8500 LE) and having extra-but-useless features.

Actually that was the GeForce 3 / Radeon 8500 year. GeForce 256 was 1999. Stuff did come out insanely rapidly back then. We went from DirectX 6 to 9 in like 3 years I think.

Well a DX50 should have quite the memory bandwidth advantage, and potentially bus too. But in some cases I'm sure it is all about pure CPU performance and a 66 is going to win then. Also I'm not sure what happens with wait states on a 50 MHz FSB. That could be crippling.
