Re: audio pci

If it's an actual "Ensoniq AudioPCI", then you must go to the E-Mu site and get the Ensoniq AudioPCI drivers from their download area. There is a driver package in there that turns the card into a SBPCI64. The Creative drivers simply don't recognize the vendor and device IDs of the original Ensoniq …

Re: Canopus Pure3D

What some people don't realize is that John Romero was a huge part of id's early days and he came up with a lot of the crazy game ideas. He also worked on Heretic and Hexen during the brief time that id Software was in Madison, WI (down the street from Raven Software). Quake didn't really turn into …

Re: Canopus Pure3D

Well like I said, Carmack suggested 4MB texture memory for Quake 2. Some fun .plan quotes http://www.team5150.com/~andrew/carmack/johnc_plan_1998.html An 8mb v2 has 2 mb of texture memory on each TMU. That is not as general as the current 6mb v1 cards that have 4 mb of texture memory on a single TMU …

Re: Canopus Pure3D

I found a Carmack .plan suggesting the 6MB version because apparently 4MB Voodoo cards are susceptible to stuttering issues with their small texture RAM. Texture swapping over PCI. He was talking about Quake 2. I think the 6MB cards have 4MB texture RAM, 2MB framebuffer? The 6MB Voodoo 1 cards …

Re: 2d video cards

He said he's looking for 2D cards to pair with his Voodoo 1 & 2... he's already got a Voodoo 3 :) Yeah I know. I was just thinking that G200 is not really an exciting choice overall. It's ok for GUI though. Some form of GeForce would be a much better companion I think. As long as it's not one of …

Re: Good AGP VGA

I have had it working on x1650 for about 8 months. Yeah I think all you need on the ATI side is a card with D3D9-level features. That open source radeon driver is excellent. I had a Radeon 7000 running Ubuntu earlier this year but I don't think I even tried to switch on the full 3D effects mode. …

Re: 2d video cards

I'd pick a Voodoo3 over any Matrox card. Voodoo3's GUI speed and analog quality is similar to G400, but it's the better choice for 3D and DOS. Otherwise I'd go for a NVIDIA card. From Riva TNT onward, NVIDIA really nailed just about everything. Most of the time the analog quality is good although …
