Re: DOSBox DOS Emulator can't start

I think you should delete the game install and re-download it. If it still doesn't work, try changing only the output= setting to other values. Are you on a non-US OS? Is that why you're trying to change the language setting? ... said as the best game ever made. How many best games ever made are …

MV Pro Audio Studio 16

A little ebay conquest here. I've been wanting to try out one of these cards. For some crazy reason I still remember reading about this in a Computer Shopper magazine >15 years ago! It's the "higher end" edition of the Pro Audio Spectrum 16. I found what appears to be a complete original package. I …

Re: Final Pentium III rig

I stumbled on a brand new Enlight 7237 a year ago or so. That was popular case back around 1999. Very beige but has nice side panels instead of the annoying slide off case body. There are a few revisions though, some without the sidepanel design and without a rear 80mm fan punchout.

Re: ESS Maestro PCI

I've had a couple of notebooks with ESS Maestro 2E. The DOS drivers are pretty bad. But in Windows 9x you get great 3D audio in hardware, and it has A3D and DS3D support that is superb. It also has a legacy driver for SB support within 9x that may work better than the pure DOS driver.

Re: Choosing a Voodoo

I like Voodoo3 because: 1) all-in-one and very fast at all of it 2) doesn't mess up 2D quality because no passthru cable 3) it has fantastic analog signal quality (as good as it gets IMO) 4) run any resolution I ran a Voodoo3 2000 PCI in a 486 once. :D There's no reason to wonder if you're running " …

Re: Dual P233 MMX DOS/Win98/XP machine

They run at 66 MHz but the wait states make it so that the RAM doesn't have to respond at 66 MHz. Look up video card specs because many of them used FPM/EDO DRAM. You can look up part numbers. And there is well-known info about memory clocks for Voodoo 1/2 cards, for example. SDRAM is synchronous …

Re: Dual P233 MMX DOS/Win98/XP machine

I don't think MMX helps with Windows XP performance at all. It does help with some games and maybe parts of DirectX. What will help XP compared to a regular Pentium is that the P55C has 32K L1 cache. SIMMs on a Pentium or Pentium Pro mobo run at 66 MHz with wait states. This is the same clock rate …

Re: Dual P233 MMX DOS/Win98/XP machine

I've seen XP run smoother than 2K on old Pentium II hardware. You just need to have enough RAM, like >192MB. On the other hand, both XP and 2K were pretty sluggish on a dual Pentium Pro 233 (1MB L2 each) box with 256MB that I set up once. You may not want to mess with NT5 at all. Older NTs are …

Re: Wing Commander III - A good game? (Warning: rant inside!)

in Milliways
I played it again a couple of years ago. This was 1994's Crysis. It didn't run well on max detail on any hardware on release and it had very nice realtime texture-mapped SVGA 3D graphics ~3 years before XvT. Video was all the rage at the time and some of the video is enjoyable I think. Ignoring WC …

Re: Real MIDI emulation?

One place it would be useful is console homebrew ports. For example SCUMMVM on Xbox has Fluidsynth so you can run soundfonts on Xbox. It was buggy when I tried it though (maybe just doesn't work with some soundfonts). On computers though or anywhere you have access to installing Timidity or whatever …

Re: SoundBlaster AWE32

SB32 is essentially a AWE32 but using the Vibra 16 tech instead of the more expensive SB16 hardware. It has the same compatibility but I'm thinking the FM synthesis hardware may be inferior. Probably lacks the onboard RAM, but it has SIMM slots. They are physically smaller cards than AWE32 because …
