You can use soundfonts (sf2) with DOS games if you are in Windows 9x and run through the card's General MIDI emulation I think (or is it the AWE mode?) I've done it. I don't know about better sbk files tho.

Have you tried changing the two IO port address jumpers? I run 320 and 608 sometimes if I have another card installed alongside. And yes it has to be set on "internal synth" for its own MIDI hardware to be used. I don't think you need to have the ESP DB for the MIDI to function but I'm not 100% …

For Win98 it's probably fine but I don't think the Intel AC97 audio will do DOS support at all.

I have a 440FX board with both Slot 1 and Socket 8. There were a few like that. This one is a Supermicro P6SKE and it is a gigantic board because it has spots for all sorts of extras like Ultra SCSI (on P6SKS).

That NLX stuff reminds me of a friend's Packard Bell 486 without any L2 cache, ISA Cirrus Logic onboard video and only ISA slots. 😵 This was a 486 born in the local bus era too. He put a Pentium Overdrive in but what was the point.

The ESS ISA chipsets have great DOS and Windows support. The PCI chipsets have DOS support too but all PCI sound chips are hit and miss for DOS. I'd say Liveware 3 but it doesn't work with Live 5.1. I'm not sure what 9x driver works with those 5.1 cards. I think I remember that you need to get some WDM driver. If Intel wanted to build gaming GPUs they could probably do it exceptionally well with their manufacturing and R&D capabilities. They could also just buy NVIDIA without flinching, I imagine.
