Re: Powerleap adapter

Yup the clock speed that a chip can manage is determined by many things. Some chips did a lot per clock but couldn't get much clock speed so it didn't matter. AMD K5 and 6x86 are good examples. K6 is a good one too because even on 180nm it can't do much more than 600 MHz whereas an Athlon or P3 can …

Re: Powerleap adapter

Couldn't scale? The Tualatin is the basis for the Pentium M and Core architectures! There was plenty of room for the PIII to grow yet but Intel wanted to get the P4 out. Now THERE was a chip that had trouble scaling later in it's life. The early P4's were even slower than the PIII when the clocks …

Actually BZ1 and 2 are two of my favorite games period. :) They don't exactly have a big following but there is a nice little community out there. Two of the BZ2 developers have been reworking BZ2 with new features and fixes for years, the latest having hardware T&L support, MSAA, anisotropic …

Re: Powerleap adapter

Well there's no doubt that they crippled the P3 desktop platform. 815 can only support 512MB RAM while 440BX can do 1GB. Some of the notebook chipsets like 830 can do more RAM though. I suppose the Tualatin didn't really have a future because it couldn't scale in clock rate. Its FSB is also …

Frankly I think both Half Life games are overrated. They are way too linear for me and the shooting is kiddie simple. HL2 is the worst though because it really pushes its narrative on you with those in-engine cutscenes that really don't work on me. And the way they get so much praise for being " …

Re: Powerleap adapter

Slotkets just tell the mobo what FSB the CPU is designed for. It's not really any different than a Slot 1 CPU in that you can just overclock past that default with mobo jumpers/BIOS settings. If the Slotket doesn't tell the mobo what FSB to use, I think you'll have compatibility problems with mobos …

Re: Powerleap adapter

My Abit BF6 is very sensitive about which card goes where. It's probably partly the mobo's fault but is undoubtedly also related to the limitations of the 440BX PCI bus. From BF6 manual: (a great manual btw) ! PCI slot 1 shares IRQ signals with the AGP slot. ! PCI slot 2 shares IRQ signals with the …

As long as the partition will fit on the 300GB, you can do that. Firstly, back up your data. Then go get Parted Magic for bootable CD or USB stick. This is a great little Linux creation that uses GParted, among other things. You can copy a partition from one drive to another very easily with GParted …

How can they put DRM into an ancient DOS game's executable? Doesn't that necessitate recompilation? That seems rather unlikely to me.

Re: Hard disk drive grinding

Well first thing to do is get the data off ASAP. Next, I would probably wipe the drive with a secure erase via drive commands or by dban. Then send it back for replacement. Diagnostics are neat but you know the drive is iffy if it's making strange noises. WD's RMA people won't care if you know there …

My take is, if it's under warranty, do WD's advance replace without a second thought. Hey you might even get an upgrade. I had a 640 replaced with a 750 recently. A year ago or so I had a Raptor 150 get replaced with the newer Velociraptor. That was particularly nice because the VR is much quieter …
