Try an older driver like say Catalyst 4.2 instead. Have you had any problems with other AGP video cards on that motherboard? Try any other ATI cards? Have you installed the VIA 4in1 drivers? 98SE might not work properly with KM266 AGP otherwise.

I think it's inherently unstable. It's just not designed with stability as a big priority. It's too easy for programs and drivers to crash it. It's a crazy hybrid of DOS and 32-bit features with the emphasis on backward compatibility and low resource usage.

I suggest not going beyond DirectX 7.0a on Win9x unless you have a good reason to. Some drivers can cause stability problems with DirectX 7.1 or later. Later Aureal drivers come to mind.

A friend had one backordered in Nov-Dec 1999. Availability was poor. I got a Creative Annihilator Pro open box in early 2000. I returned it though because I felt its rendering was strangely choppy. Frame rates were great but it seemed to have a stutter to it. Stuck with my overclocked G400.

Compatibility problems with two devices on a cable is certainly not unheard of. ATAPI devices are especially irritable. If you've enabled DMA, undo that. PIO mode might work if DOS works. Though it's not likely you want to actually live with PIO mode in Windows.
