Re: Voodoo 2 component map

in Marvin \ Video
Hi, I used an LCR bridge. In my case, the measured values were closer to 4.7uF than 3.3uF. Some variation is normal, some manufacturers modified the reference design a bit (the card shown in the first post has polarity markings for the 1206 caps and uses ceramic caps, some manufacturers used …

Re: Faulty v2?

Most likely the ICs are OK. Gently poke all TMU/FBI pins and see if any of them move. Then check for broken traces, corrosion, missing/chipped passives.

Besides missing/broken SMDs and bent FBI/TMU pins, another thing that should be checked on any faulty V2 card is loose FBI/TMU pins. Try gently poking each pin and see if any of them moves. Also, check out the post made by Tronix here: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=64338 The debug utility …

@gex85 No problem! But before replacing the cap I'd recommend checking the card for other damage, I don't see how a missing C128 would cause this behavior. C128 is used for TMU0 RAM VCC decoupling, the card should be detected without it.

It looks like an SMD capacitor array, possibly 0612 size, probably in the 10nF-100nF range. You could remove a similar one from the board and measure it, but 100nF 16-25V will most likely be OK. The remains of this cap array could be shorting one of the GPU power rails, you could try removing it …

Re: Voodoo 2... bad memory or something else?

Glad to hear you fixed it! Drag soldering works quite well with the right flux, right tip and the correct temperature. There are many types of flux out there, some are really good, some are crap. Solder wick is really useful if the drag soldering approach doesn't work, same as the flux, some brands …

No problem, I hope it works fine after soldering it. It's not really a good idea to use hot air on such old ICs , the epoxy package had ~20 years to absorb moisture. Just use a small tip on your soldering tool, with a little solder on it (preferably the type with lead in it), and apply flux on the …
