A lot of games really liked having those MMX instructions and so had a P166MMX as their minimum CPU requirement.

I second that T22 idea, but I'd also love something like that Compaq laptop that was incredibly thin by 90s/early 2000s standards.

Yeah, it works great. My CPU was working before but having the newest BIOS is always a good insurance policy for a CPU you aren't sure is supported.

Yeah, it's really not something I even want to try, but I spent like two hours trying to find any of the BIOS update files for this motherboard and came up with only broken links and sadness.

Okay, so when I did the install with a normal 98SE CD instead everything was fine. I guess that was the issue then. That driver CD works inside Windows too so I should still be able to get the motherboard and graphics card drivers off it after Windows finishes installing.

My guess is that "Unattended Boot CD with all the drivers on it". The boot floppy is just to get the CDROM active, the actual not retail/not OEM Windows CD media is what cause it. You know what, that would be the most logical explanation wouldn't it? I'll try reinstalling with a normal 98SE disk …

I removed my unused PCI Ultra66 ATA controller (as the board has onboard ATA-100) and I thought that would have fixed it but the optical drives still aren't showing up under My Computer. EDIT: turned out I just needed chipset drivers and all was well. That was surprisingly easy.
