out of curiosity yjfy, are most of these 3000 gfx cards in working condition? In the case of the 1000 engineering samples in particular, I guess they range from early prototypes to release candidates, are they still mostly usable and recognized by regular drivers?

I have a 17" (Compaq MV740), 19" (HP 91) and a 21" CRT (Sony G500). The 17" is the most recent acquisition, and I switched the 19" I was using for DOS with my 486 with it. I always liked big screens, but the 17" is definitely a better fit for DOS resolution, makes everything look just a bit more …

My favourite DOS OSTs however come from Epic Pinball (not MIDI but Screamtracker or something similar iirc - the Android table's theme is my ringtone since many years ^^) This screams for hunting for a GUS or compatible as a future upgrade, if you can find one for a decent price, which is not easy …

CT3900! Real OPL3, (one of) the best of the AWE32's, and it's a perfect fit for a MMX Socket7 build. Also note it's non-PnP. The only potential downside would be buggy MIDI but as you said you don't care about it..case solved.

There are ways to slow down fast CD/DVD drives to 4x speed, which makes them almost completely silent. For pure DOS you can use CDBeQuiet! by fellow Vogons user @Locutus. For Win9x there is Nero Drive Speed which can do something similar. On my 486 I use teac_cdi.sys that has a /S parameter to …
