I'd suggest a low-tech electronic solution: put a 4-way switch onto a blank 5.25" plate, then wire the GND for the drives through that switch. Yes, but XP won't install unless it can create a boot loader on the first drive according to the OS. So the entire drive needs to be hidden not just the partition.

I didn't expect changing, hiding or temporarily removing partitions to work. Windows XP for example today insisted that the primary disk have a compatible partition so it can put the boot loader on. Yes, I've resoldered the 3 loose wires but it hasn't changed things. It's going in a box and maybe some day I'll pull it out and strip it right down, give it 5V and probe the pots etc and see what's what. It's really not easy to work with inside.

There's no way they've pulled themselves loose so my guess is it has failed at some point and someone has opened it up to try and see if they can fix …

Another issue found/worked around. Rebooting with ctrl-alt-del will cause the cd-rom driver to fail to find it, a full reboot fixes this. It took me a while to realise that was what the problem was. Hope it helps someone else.
