Re: Hiding disks

I'd suggest a low-tech electronic solution: put a 4-way switch onto a blank 5.25" plate, then wire the GND for the drives through that switch. Set to desired position before boot and enjoy a single working drive. Something like that could work. And perhaps when I strip them down I'll do something. …

Re: Hiding disks

I didn't expect changing, hiding or temporarily removing partitions to work. Windows XP for example today insisted that the primary disk have a compatible partition so it can put the boot loader on. It wouldn't continue without it so even if I did manage to conceal the partition it would still fail, …

Re: Hiding disks

yep, switching the autodetection off in the bios is definitely not the way to do it. disabling an IDE port/controller might work, though that would mean you'll lose two devices at once. having a manual switch on the power lines of the hard drives will work, though can sometimes give problems with …

Hiding disks

Typically when I install an OS I will remove all drives in the system apart from the one I'd like to use. That means I don't run into any problems with boot stuff going onto the wrong drive. However I now have 4 midi towers beside each other, connecting into a mixer, a KVM, switch, midi switch etc …

Re: Gameport breakout cables

My first reflex would be to look for one with moulded plastic connectors, like this one https://www.amazon.ca/Universal-Connector-Joystick-Musical-Keyboards/dp/B071PC2RGY . That is what the old ones back in the day looked like when they were still being mass produced . New crappy ones are likely …

Gameport breakout cables

in DOS
I've found that both of the breakout cables I'd bought on ebay are only wired for MIDI, and none of the joystick pins are connected. Is there a reliable way to buy these cables, or will I have to make my own? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143909636068 This is the latest one I bought. The other is …

Yeah, I have a USB one which I last used for Tie Fighter, but I can't use that in DOS. I've edited my top post with what I learned about this one. I'm unimpressed with it to say the least. Even the screws on the top are cosmetic and don't actually hold anything together. This is very much a stick …

https://i.imgur.com/ZbCVOcx.jpg From that you can see that the main axis isn't detected at all, which explains the behaviour. Yes I bought a Thrustmaster today, cost less than I thought. Seems gameport joysticks are not in high demand!

Yes, I've resoldered the 3 loose wires but it hasn't changed things. It's going in a box and maybe some day I'll pull it out and strip it right down, give it 5V and probe the pots etc and see what's what. It's really not easy to work with inside.

Re: Joysticks in DOS

I tried a lot more troubleshooting and determined that the main axis was not being detected. So I've opened it up and there were 3 loose wires inside. There's no way they've pulled themselves loose so my guess is it has failed at some point and someone has opened it up to try and see if they can fix …

Re: Show us your custom Physical mt32-pi Builds

Here's what I've been working on for a few weeks now - my MT32-pi case which is designed to look like a shrunken regular MT32, but with the bigger 20x2 LCD. Yours looks fantastic, it's exactly what I imagined I wanted one to look like. What are your plans for your design once you've finished it?

I hope there's some kind of config for it, but I bought it used, unboxed with no manual etc. I've been unable to find a manual or drivers.

Edit : Turns out mine was broken but since I did manage to work out some information about it I thought I'd post it here, in case it helps someone. This is a 4 axis 4 button joystick. The 3 red buttons are standard josytick buttons and the 4th button is at thumb position halfway up the stick. It …
