IIRC I think serial runs upto 24V anyway so shouldn't be an issue on that front. May want to check that though.

It should just work. The controller doesn't need to be jumpered to DD. It's just that the XT wont be able to use the HD data rate used by 1.44MB disks. If you read a 720KB disk on an AT, the controller is behaving as it would on an XT. All floppy controllers have no idea what you have connected to …

Parents had a cafe for a while and though to using one in it, but old till met their requirement fine, so never got to play with that hardware. I've never had any compatibility problems with using 1.44MB drives in place of 720KB drives either. 5.25 drives are another kettle of fish. Here is what i would recommend to make a boot floppy. 1. Wipe a 1.44MB disk with a magnet then tape over the density hole. Or just get a 720K disk. 2. Format it …

You mention you stuck an AT keyboard in it. It's an XT so needs an XT keyboard. Check if your keyboard has an XT switch on the bottom of it. You'll get nothing out of an XT with an AT keyboard. Iirc that interface most closely resembles st-506, so you may be able to do a hookup that way. Or just go with an addon card. SCSI is probably going to be the easiest.

I think that Compaq PSU is a similar size to IBM PSUs from that era. I have crammed the IBM EPS12V PSUs into all sorts of midi tower cases. Antec/Chieftec cases come to mind. IIRC i could get two of the screw holes to line up properly.
