Probably my Powerleap PL-iP3/T complete with Tualatin 1.4GHz. Makes my Slot 1 machine about as fast as it’s possible to be, and makes for a great base late 90s to early 2000s gaming machine. It’s a great fit for my second favourite piece, my Voodoo 5 5500.

On your diag card, are all the voltage rails present, and what does the reset indicator state? Is the board being held in reset? Always worth throwing up a few high-res photos of the board, someone might spot something you've missed!

I remember back in the day we used to “stealth” our optical drives behind the standard drive bay plates. Remove the side tabs, stick the plate to the drive-tray, and a well placed screw or nut to allow a slightly pressed plate to press the drive button.

Thought I’d cracked it today. Ditched the USB mouse for a PS/2 one and had a good hour or so of stability, but now it’s back to its usual self. Oh well, caps should be here tomorrow.

It’s more likely that at idle or basic 2D tasks, the strain on the voltage rails is minimal, and the weak or failing capacitors aren’t particularly required for stable voltage rails. Add some load into the mix and the bad caps will be causing voltage ripple and thus instability.
