Re: My Very Long Bus Adventure.

The fastest option for DOS (VGA) is the ARK1000. But for the crown in SVGA it lacks the LFB. It doesn't feel comfortable under Windows either. I did some tests with VLB graphic cards on the SV2GX4 with the Am5x86@160MHz. This is awesome, thanks for sharing! Which BIOS and settings? What VLB card …

Re: My Very Long Bus Adventure.

I picked up the 5429 for less than $40, it’s probably not the card I’ll keep on this board. I needed something quick to be sure I could get the board to post and wasn’t getting ripped off with a dead board. I would of used an ISA card but I didn’t have any of those lying around either. I def want to …

Re: My Very Long Bus Adventure.

I've seen your fps and they seem to be a bit too low, even with 256k cache. How tight are your memory and cache timings? Is your L2 in WB or WT? The amount of RAM fits to your current L2 size. Hi Disruptor, here are my current bios settings. One driving factor for sure is that I’m stuck in WT for …

Re: Cirrus Logic 5429 VLB issues in Windows

Disruptor wrote on 2021-10-04, 00:43: May I have a dump of your VGA BIOS please? Hi Disruptor, any advice you can provide on dumping roms? I’ve got a TL866II-Plus and the rom chip from the card is a Winbond W27F256-10 part but I don’t see this option in Xgpro. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Cirrus Logic 5429 VLB issues in Windows

Even with 2MB RAM on paper it should support higher colours at higher resolutions, but it would be the RAMDAC that's the limitation here. I've been playing around with a few VLB cards recently in Windows 3.1 (ET4000 W32i 1MB, ARK1000VL 2MB, Cirrus Logic something 2MB), apart from only the highest …

Re: Cirrus Logic 5429 VLB issues in Windows

Including switching to 256 colors? Ah yes, good point, it hits 75Hz at 256 colors and isn’t interlaced. Nice. If you really do want to push the 5429 to its limits I would recommend playing with Linux where you have super fine grained control over everything. The 5429 is a Windows 3.x era card, so I …

Re: Cirrus Logic 5429 VLB issues in Windows

Loaded the monitor driver for my NEC FE991SB and still the same. It seems 800x600 is stuck at 60Hz and 1024 is stuck at 87Hz, according to the monitor, regardless of changes made in Windows. Including switching to 256 colors? Ah yes, good point, it hits 75Hz at 256 colors and isn’t interlaced. …

Re: Cirrus Logic 5429 VLB issues in Windows

The CL-GD5429 predates Windows 95 even, so I think the Microsoft-provided driver is the only one around. Are you using a CRT or LCD? That makes sense, I’m using a CRT, tried a few different refresh settings and 75Hz. Although the monitor keeps reporting the same 60hz no matter what I change in …

Re: My Very Long Bus Adventure.

CL5429 can be dang fast though. Good ones. I can see you've got a short-arse one, that's promising, think all my best ones were the shorter ones. That’s great to hear! The 29 did come out on top of Phils benchmarks, out of the Cirrus chipsets he had to test, so I’ve got some hope for it. The …

Re: My Very Long Bus Adventure.

Discovered that Scitech Display Doctor allows me to run 320x400 in Duke 3D with this Cirrus Logic board which I find to be the perfect trade off in resolution and performance for faster 486 systems. I def get a boost in performance using VESA modes in Duke 3D but no gains in Quake, actually a slight …
