Re: Dungeon Siege 1 running poorly

Sorry to resurrect this but my current testing with DS1 is relevant. I installed Legends of Aranna on the following machine: ASRock 775Dual-VSTA Pentium 4 640 @3.2Ghz 2GB of DDR2 667 GeForce GTS 250 (PCI-E) 240GB SSD Windows XP Pro SP3 Even running on a system like this one, Dungeon Siege still only …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

you don't need the SET BLASTER variable for orpheus, when you call ORPHEUS.BAT it will create the variable according to the settings specified in orpheus.ini Is that safe to do though? I recall Hocus Pocus disliking certain values being present in the variable. Edit: Testing on your suggestions …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

does a game like jazz jackrabbit work for you? I just finished setting up the card in my machine but Jazz refuses to start when I configure the game for GUS. It asks me to run sound setup: no_start_gus.png orphinit.png ultrasnd.png I used the preinstalled ULTRASND directory from the website.

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

This may sound like a silly question, but can the Adlib chip be turned off? I actually prefer to use a separate ISA card for Adlib exclusively, and then redirect it into my primary card via line-in. This way I have more precise control over the volume. FM synthesis volume always seems to be tied to …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

You should be aware, however, that currently-shipping Orpheus cards all use coaxial digital outputs, so unless your converter has both (doesn't look like it does), it won't be a plug-and-play solution. Aha! Well then, sticking to the analog 3.5mm jacks it is! The audio coming through the capture …

doogie wrote on 2023-04-08, 23:12: Great quality. The real selling point (at least for me) is all sources output via SPDIF. That is quite interesting because I recently received my VGA2HDMIPRO (StarTech.com/ConvergeAV) which has an optical input for audio. Should be able to grab even clearer audio …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

I'm still in regardless, just curious why this and other isa cards get poopooed for basic XP gaming, if it doesnt work or is just "not the best" Might have something to do with XP era games using more sound channels than these older cards can support, causing dropouts/missed sfx etc. I've run into …

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

only some early PnP systems do not like CS4237 for some reason, some DELL Optiplex 5xxx/6xxx ones, a Casio 486 and IIRC the 486SP3 motherboard are not compatible because they cannot detect the CS4237 this is a CS4237 and BIOS issue so nothing to be done in these cases - more info on this is on the …

keropi wrote on 2023-02-12, 05:17: Yes the card will function but you will lose classic GUS support in games. So by adding even a 4mb stick will enable this support , no need to go full 16mb for that. Will a 32MB SIMM work? Using only 16MB of it?

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

Another option, although it's probably not a simple change would be to use a laptop SODIMM in place of the 72-pin memory. In this case though I imagine the power/compatibility complexity would require enough new chips on the board that it would be the same size anyways. 🤣

Re: Orpheus II soundcard thread

Hmmm, something just came to mind @keropi. For my main DOS rig I'm using a fairly new SilverStone case. It has USB 3 and HD Audio connectors. I've already located a USB3 to USB2 adapter, but what I haven't found is a HD Audio to AC'97 adapter. Could such an adapter be optionally bundled with the …

Re: Access NAS share from Windows 95 OSR2

You can ssh into your qnap, edit the smb conf file and enable ntlmv1 and lanman if you don't want to bother with setting up Windows 95 for NTLMV2 or according to my notes from when I last did this and checking against https://blog.udance.com.au/2017/07/10/stronger-authentication-for-windows-95 : 1. …
