People coming from the Apple II world, and the PC world were only familiar with text based interfaces. So everything about a GUI was new and amazing. We take much of it for granted now.

Back when I had 19" CRT monitors, and had to swap floppies/CDs all the time, I rather liked the desktop format. It was nice to keep the system under the monitor for that reason. I was operating a BBS at the time. I was able to to get it shortly after it released via shareware. My little Gateway 2000 486SX/20 at the time did chug a bit trying to play it, but, man was it awesome!

Wine won't work well for old Windows 95/98 era Games. Wine's focus is more on modern Windows XP and above. There is little effort in the Wine community to maintain backwards compatibility with older apps and Games. Just try running 16 bit apps in Wine, doh! Also, if you want things like Voodoo …

For me it is a mix of preservation and nostalgia. I've built a pre 2K rig because I want to play it near exactly the way it was back then. It may be a pipe dream to keep the rig running forever. I've already lost two different motherboards due to age and bad caps.

I am a web developer and systems/network administrator for a small software company. It is not surprising that so many of us IT guys love retro computing. In my case, DOS and old games helped get me where I am today.

Until we have something that can emulate Win9X era computing with VooDoo graphic and early OpenGl/D3D acceleration we will need actual hardware. I keep a BX chipset P3 computer with dual voodoo2 cards for this very reason.

I just use my 28" LCD same as my non retro PCs. They all share the same KVM. I guess I've never been one to dedicate the desktop real estate to a retro monitor.
