What speed are utilities like checkit, norton sysinfo, landmark speed test, ... reporting the cpu to be running at at the moment?

I tried a few adapters in a compaq armada m700. one sata to ide wouldn't allow me to turn dma mode on as long as the cd/dvd drive was also connected. (They're on the same ide channel.) same problem with an SD to ide adapter other Sata to ide adapter works without problems.

at least your cf adapter has a proper voltage regulator and not a pair of diodes 😀

Windows 3.x doesn't have system files. those come from the underlying ms/pc/whatever-dos system it is running on. the fact you formatted it in windows is rather meaningless. Good to know you tested with w95 and 98Se disks as well. Still leaves the same question jakethompson1 has. 😀 cheers.

there's three files in the 4402 zip. you could always test if the Plop Boot Manager allows booting from cd on those controllers.

Cool. I remember seeing a schematic for the same idea that used two ferranti zn428e chips. unfortunately at the time, early nineties, the chips were already unobtainable for poor young me.

I'd wonder what the difference is, in software, between booting from harddisk and booting from floppy.... ? and yeah, if you've got another bios to try, or another bios image for your motherboard.. go for it.

Check your turbo switch. if there's less than 6 pins (two with wires attached), you'll need a new switch. a DPDT switch is needed. if there's 6 pins, of which two have wires, you'll need a 3 wire cable to solder on and connect to the turbo indicator display.

FYI, you can save some memory by moving TSRs from autoexec.bat to config.sys using INSTALL/INSTALLHIGH. it's to do with the size of the environment variable memory (it's the one where the PATH=, BLASTER=, etc... are located), the one that gets set with the /E:xxxx behind the SHELL= line, also …

Have you tried an 8 bit MDA card ? or tape off the 16bit part of the ISA connector on the trident card. or just shove the trident card in the 8bit slot :-p
