If you plan on using the YMF744 card on Windows 2000, be warned that those drivers might be suboptimal. In particular, General MIDI playback can have crackling on NT based operating systems. I would give 98SE a shot, even if you don't have DDMA. The card should still work fine for Windows games. …

What were the first versions of Windows to support SSE2 and SSE3 respectively? I ask because I found a good deal on a 775 board with AGP and a Celeron D 351 (3.2GHz) included, which supports both of those. I'd like to use the oldest version of Windows that supports SSE3.

I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 4, which has drivers for every edition of Windows from 98 to 10. DOS support is a bonus but not a necessity for me. I want to play Win32 games ranging from Nightmare Creatures (1997) to Severance: Blade of Darkness (2001). I don't plan on playing DX9 games on this PC.
