HL had some great mods back in the day. They Hunger, USS Darkstar, The Awakening, Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, and the list goes on. That and HL2 were the only games where I really got into mods. For HL2, the Cinematic Mod is the only one I ever installed.

Lots of people use FreeDOS for gaming and other tasks, without any issues. The latest version works wonderfully with many games. MS-DOS 6.22 is the DOS version that people should be using for "authentic" DOS systems and compatibility.

I can find refurb desktops from that time period at the local Micro Center and other places, but it's not worth buying, because I can buy slightly newer desktops as well, and still run XP on it or turn it into a 64-bit Linux box. The original used MT-32 for it's MIDI. I am not familiar enough with the music to say what the CD version's audio tracks were minted from, but it wasn't uncommon for CD tracks to be recorded from different synths or "mixed together" from different ones.

I vaguely recall people installing the old DX install package on Windows 10 to bring back DirectDraw and older functions. I didn't do that, but I do sort of remember that people were downloading the old installer that would install the old DX files for use.

DVI-D ports actually do carry digital sound, when configured to do so with the otherwise unused pins, so you can get digital audio from a DVI-HDMI adapter or cable.
