The SC-8738 only has a General MIDI capable synth on board. The "General MIDI 128 Sounds" mentioned here [1] is a software based synthesizer of some kind and an Pentium 120 CPU may not be fast enough to handle it properly or it may be some other issue. I would not bother with it at this point . …

My favorite tool for this is a brass wire brush. It's very effective against rust, but soft enough so that it won't scratch the steel. Success! Just used some needle nose pliers and gently pulled and twisted. The clip Came right off. The shield came off relatively easy too.

Yoghoo and dionb thank you both for your replies. Currently I don't see myself needing the other features of the -C variant. I just need simple file transfers. I can get the -C variant a bit cheaper than the TPO version. However the smaller form factor of the TPO version is tempting.
