I assumed he was working from the original disks, given the error. It sounds like a "bad sector" disk check type of copy protection. If so, there is probably little that he can do about it, short of cracking it.

I am not familiar with this game, but if it is like the CPC copy protection you will not be able to do much about it in DOSBox. In the future you should ask DOSBox questions in the DOSBox forum

One thing to look for is that some discs would start 32-bit installers from a 16-bit autorun program or another launcher. Simply installing from the main installer directly works in these cases.
