Strange character doubling in LESS for DOS

I found a strange behaviour when I run LESS for DOS (version 381) in DOSBox. When I type a slash character ("/") to search the loaded file, every character of the search expression that I type after that will appear on the screen twice. It doesn't happen in real DOS and I assume that the difference …

Re: CGA Composite Mode under DOSBOX?

It looks what NewRisingSun wants to achieve by making colours prettier by making red more reddish and brown more brownish or providing knobs for people to regulate like reenigne suggest is simply not possible, cause game programmers were using one color as more then one color even in one game. …

Re: CGA Composite Mode under DOSBOX?

The RGB values produced from the existing YIQ-to-RGB matrix aren't gamma corrected, are they? I don't see anything that looks like gamma correction in the existing DOSBox code, and if I gamma correct the output of that I get something which looks much more like the output of the TV connected to the …

Re: CGA Composite Mode under DOSBOX?

Are there Games that: 1.) Want to display CGA RGB mode 4 graphics, and 2.) don't work with machine=ega or another newer type, and 3.) don't look acceptable with composite rendering? Probably there are... But if not, composite mode could simply be made the default for machine=cga and mode 4, no? Or …

Re: CGA Composite Mode under DOSBOX?

Can you take a picture of what those same Mask of the Sun screens look like on your TV? I'm interested to see what it makes of them. I'm on a little vacation for Easter. Will try when I get back. Since I'm not much of a photographer, I'll have to fiddle with my (oldish) cellphone's camera and hope …

Re: CGA Composite Mode under DOSBOX?

Actually, now that I remember some more details about the Apple II video hardware - that latter explanation makes much more sense. As I recall, in the "high res" graphics mode each byte controls the colours for a horizontally contiguous group of 7 pixels, each the width of a low-res CGA pixel. The …

Re: CGA Composite Mode under DOSBOX?

Here's two emulator screenshots from Apple II "Mask of the Sun" showing the effect or rather the lack of it (in the tree trunks, and in the greenish background of the other one - notice how other "mixed" colors use dithering while these do not). The emulator used here (a modified YAE 0.6) doesn't …

Re: CGA Composite Mode under DOSBOX?

Thanks for the effort! I noticed some of the composite images you just posted (e.g. the one from Ancient Art of War) have areas with horizontal stripes. Might it be a good idea to also implement something like the PAL color delay line? I think some NTSC monitors had one too, right? And if they …

Re: TextAssist doesn't work

Maybe I remember this wrongly, but isn't TextAssist some Creative Labs stuff that requires very special hardware that's only found on real Soundblaster cards? Hardware that no sane non-Creative program ever used because Creative had shitty licensing policies and pretty much required signing away …
