On real hardware, TGR2 was closest to perfect on a S3 864 card with 86C716 DAC. The final issue was 32k colors vs 65k. The demo maker seems to have had some weird DAC.

DOSBox emulates up to some Pentium instructions. Have you had a look at Bochs yet?

There's also the Transgression 2 Demo (start with tgr2 -hc), which uses an unknown DAC. My Megabuild 5 has a half-assed implementation for it in machine=vgaonly. Have you seen this datasheet? It might have additional info. http://www.datasheetarchive.com/SC11487-datasheet.html

One little tip: VirtualBox certainly won't make friends with DOS games with their current stub implementation of the VGA status port (3da).
