Not sure about 40MHz, but 66MHz+ 486s always had heatsink and fan. Slower Pentiums may have only a heatsink and no fan if the power supply fan helps it. 33MHz and slower 486s had neither fan nor heatsink.

The INT14/AH81 function is not documented as a PC's serial port function. I haven't figured out yet what it is supposed to do. Some thoughts of what it could be: - Maybe your program comes with an own serial port driver that fails to load in DOSBox - 81H works on the real PC because of some side …

Did you disable the built in floppy/IDE controller when you tried the ISA one? Usually the BIOS does a checksum check on itself so it should be allright if you get more than just beeps. The chip is a EEPROM. If the other boards have flash and not eeproms on them I think it's rather unlikely it will …
