Google says that CAT28F010P-15 is a model number for a 1 Megabit CMOS Flash PROM chip from Catalyst Semiconductor. As 5u3 said, there are probably other chip models that are drop-in compatible.

My 486-120 wouldn't even run Dink Smallwood, let alone Half-Life. It did run Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II in software mode (at maybe 5 FPS) and Quake 1 at around 15 FPS.

I doubt PCI performance is going to be a limiting factor when the 486 CPU is only 66MHz. Maybe a 486DX4 would push it.

I use DOSBox myself because it's more convenient, but I've always thought about building a retro machine. I don't think I'll ever get around to it, though, even though I've been holding onto some nice parts (Tseng ET4000 and S3 Virge, SB16 and AWE64 Gold, a couple of nice CRTs, etc.).

Make sure to install VIA AGP drivers if you want to get decent AGP performance and stability.

The older cards were reverse engineered and well documented because developers had to interface directly with them because there wasn't any fancy Windows driver type stuff sitting between the hardware and the developer. SB Live is a Windows-centric card - I've never actually heard of anything DOS- …

Ugh, I feel your pain. Had to take the bus home from work a few times and a 15 minute drive across the valley turned into a 1+ hour bus ride due to having to wait for 2 buses.

Nice, I had to use an amber Hercules setup for a couple years around 1990 when the EGA monitor in my 8MHz 286 blew out from overheating due to someone putting a printer on top of its vents 😳 Does SIMCGA work in DOSBox while running in Hercules mode?

Thexder's copy protection uses illegally formatted sectors, so you may need to crack it even if you do get an image of it to mount properly in DOSBox.
