Definitely the MT-32, and then maybe the AWE32+DB60XG. You'd get MT-32 + MPU-401 General MIDI capability with that setup I think. Personally I have an MT-32 and SC-88 external synths and I use them with DOSBox via a USB MIDI cable.

If it's running under DOSBox then how will it think it's running under Windows? You could try mounting some other directory in DOSBox and then making a fake c:\docume~1\alluse~1\desktop\ tree from there. The game probably checks some environment variables though to find the path.
