Actually those specs are really decent. My desktop in college was a PII-450 that I later upgraded to a PIII-550 using spare parts from a friend, and it was barely able to run Morrowind. At 900MHz you should be able to run a fair amount of stuff - in fact the GPU may be more of a limiting factor. …

I've heard of it, but it wasn't an issue since I had the spare partition available. Might use it to test out Ubuntu on my old desktop though, since the WinXP install on there is getting a bit too crufty and I'm mostly using it as a file server and web browsing machine now anyways.

Most games designed for Win9x or newer are 32-bit, but some use 16-bit installers. 64-bit versions of Windows do not support 16-bit applications.

DOSBox won't pass LPT1 out to the host OS unless you use a version with the directserial patch. The other emus might do it, I'm not sure.

I read about uninstalling Pulse but haven't had the guts to try. It annoys me though because Wine doesn't play very nice with it. There's a patch for Wine that makes it use Pulse directly as an output, but they won't incorporate it officially into Wine because they're planning to replace the whole …

Maybe check your dosbox config and see if it's set to use a lower priority when in the background. If it is, then set it to use the same priority that it's set to use in the foreground.
