I have some 5.25" drives laying around. I need to get them hooked up to the PIII-550 system in the closet that my mom left behind and use it to rip some of my 5.25" disks before they become unusable due to degradation. Has anyone else worked with old floppies recently? Are they wearing out?

No idea, I've never played that game. I just always look at patches-scrolls when people report problems in case there's a patch, because it may help.

Not likely, unless you have a lot of stuff running in the background. Doom itself isn't very memory hungry and either is Win95.

Yeah I'm not bothering to try playing in full-screen since it's a 320x200 turn-based game. I'm thinking of shrinking the DOSBox windowresolution to get more screen space for maps.

They're probably not going to be drastically different for standard VGA, and if you need hi-res modes then you may be limited by which chipsets the demos support (unless they use VESA).

If the computer is fast enough or if the game isn't too resource-demanding then you probably won't notice any difference. Win95 will take up some RAM but will provide virtual memory from its swapfile/pagefile on the disk, so if you're running with a small amount of RAM then you may get slowdowns due …

You guys are making me miss my desk, which is currently buried in the garage. These days I'm using a laptop on the couch in front of the TV. I'm planning to build a new desktop soon though and set up my desk in a new area. Edit: Stickied thread 😀

Maybe try removing the VIA controller device from Device Manager and then have it "Scan for hardware changes" (or reboot). You could also try uninstalling the VIA driver(s) from Add/Remove Programs.

I feel like I'm missing out on part of the game experience by cheating (unless it's to get around a bug for example). Usually I find something else to play if a game is too long or grindy. I think that's why I put down Albion again 🙁

I'm pretty sure the 486DX4-120 I had used both a heatsink and fan, but I think the fan died at one point and we used a desk fan blowing into the case to keep it cool enough to run (mostly) stable until we could get a replacement.
