Things to try: - alt+tab out of the game and use the task manager to set the process affinity to a single CPU core - toggle vsync in your nvidia driver options - disable SLI (if you're using it) in your nvidia driver options - upgrade or downgrade your video drivers - run in a compatibility mode

Try output=opengl. You could also try setting a different fullresolution. Maybe your computer just can't handle the low resolutions that DOSBox is trying to use.

When you install 0.73, it puts the conf file in one of your Vista user folders (because in Vista/Win7, files in Program Files are supposed to be read-only), and creates a shortcut in your Start Menu called something like "Edit DOSBox configuration". You're supposed to use that to edit your .conf.

el_pusher is correct, output=surface doesn't work well on a lot of modern Vista/Win7 systems. Also, 0.72 is outdated and you will thus not get much support for it.

If you haven't yet, you definitely should try out the kx drivers. Makes Live rather amazing even today. http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/index.php?language=en The kX project drivers are really neat, I used them about 5-6 years ago with my SBLive. I like how they actually let you "wire" the internals …

I'm not saying Creative isn't smart in terms of corporate strategy - quite the opposite in fact. Also, Wikipedia and other sources clearly state that Aureal died because Creative litigated them into the ground and then scooped up their ashes into a garbage bag despite the fact that Aureal won.

I thought FluidSynth was supposed to be super-awesome or whatever, but I didn't find any obvious instructions on connecting it to the Windows MIDI mapper (even via MIDI Yoke). I believe I got VSC working fine in XP at one point.

I actually have a X-Fi running 5.1 analog output to a receiver. Aside from the annoying wires, which are only annoying during the initial hookup anyway, it's probably superior to lossy DDL. If I were willing to dual-boot then I'd just use my USB-MIDI adapter that works in XP but not Win7, and hook my synths up to my laptop 😀

As I said, I'm using a laptop so an expansion card is not an option. I tried to install the latest version I could find of the Roland VSC, but it doesn't seem to work at all with Win7.
