Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Re: ... An Idea ...

Exactly. Also, I recall owning a lot of non-booter games with disk-based copy protection (mostly older Sierra games). I remember reading that they would usually mark a sector as "bad" on the disk and then access it in a different mode from normal sectors. DOS would skip copying the data inside if …

Re: USB joystick

Make sure it works in Windows first by testing it on the game controllers control panel applet. Then make sure DOSBox reports it in the status window. Games running inside DOSBox see all joysticks as gameport joysticks because that's all there was back in the days of DOS (so that's what DOSBox …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

The Amiga versions of SCI0 games were all done in 1990 and later. Now, *please* stop spreading this nonsense that these samples were included with PC versions for the sake of non-PC versions. MobyGames lists 1989, not 1990, as the release year for the Amiga and Atari ST versions (not that I'm …

Re: ... An Idea ...

For copy-protected games I think it would be acceptible to include as good a disk image as possible along with a working crack. It's probably also possible by now to duplicate and emulate some of the old floppy copy-protections.

A write-in or petition campaign would be an appropriate community appeal, but spamming form letters at them is going to be ineffective.

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

About SQ3: I've heard it suggested that perhaps the digitized sounds were made for the Amiga version. or maybe an Adlib/Soundblaster driver that only used the OPL chip). Did it come on 5.25" or on 3.5" floppy disks? On my single 1.018 SQ3, the SNDBLAST.DRV was only on the 3.5" floppy disk. It's also …

If you don't care about Windows games, then an ISA SoundBlaster 16 is the best way to go (since you have an SCC-1 for Sound Canvas and General MIDI and LAPC for MT-32 MIDI) in my opinion.

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

For SQ3, I don't think running MT-32 music with Sound Blaster sounds would be a great idea; majority of the sampled sounds are from the MT-32 version so the MT-32 actually sounds better for sound effects! There's some exceptions like the "where am i" speech, but otherwise not really worth the …

Re: The Horde

The CVS builds no longer use the dpmi setting. You should see the CVS Builds thread for info on regenerating your config file so you can see the options available for the current CVS versions. Also, you may want to try the normal, full, and dynamic cores to see if that changes anything.

The problem with the Ensoniq .ECW banks is that there were only ever 3 of them made. They're decent, but even a Roland Sound Canvas sounds better. Also, the SBLive has DOS drivers that are nearly identical to the PCI128's, including using .ECW files.
